If you just received a denial or proposed severance letter for fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis / MASLD), you’re probably frustrated and wondering what’s going on. Many veterans are receiving very similar boilerplate letters right now.
Why These Letters Are Going Out
It appears the VA is sending out a wave of these notices — almost like test balloons — to see how veterans respond. In many cases, the language is generic and calls fatty liver “just a laboratory finding,” even when VA doctors previously diagnosed it based on ultrasound, symptoms, and clinical notes.

What You Should Do Right Now
- Request your full C-File immediately — This is the most important step.
- File a VA Form 21-4138 (Statement in Support of Claim) clearly disagreeing with the proposal and requesting a predetermination hearing.
- Highlight any prior VA ultrasound reports, doctor diagnoses, and treatment plans (weight loss recommendations, follow-up notes, etc.).
- Submit new and relevant evidence to trigger a fresh review or file a Higher-Level Review if there was a clear error.
- Do not ignore the letter — timely response is critical.
